As a sophomore high school student, I was planning my junior year schedule and needed to fulfill an elective. At the time, I was beginning to consider what major I would pursue in college. This became a difficult task since I was interested in a wide variety of subjects.

After talking to my mother who enjoyed the accounting courses she took in high school and bouncing the idea off my advisor, I decided to sign up for the course. Knowing that accounting skills would be necessary in any field that I might pursue, I decided to sign up for the two semester course and figured that I could always drop the second semester if necessary. The accounting teacher, Mrs. Heinrich, taught us accounting through exercises and case projects.

Ironically, it was during the second semester of this course that I decided to become a CPA. Mrs. Heinrich brought in several CPAs who spoke to our class about the profession and organized a field trip to a local Big 4 firm where we spoke with employees who were alums of my high school. Hearing about the opportunities available to CPAs and visiting that office made me realize that I wanted to become a CPA. Suddenly, I had discovered a profession that would allow me to develop key skills while providing endless opportunities in numerous industries.

As a thank you to these influential individuals, I am very involved in recruiting and promoting the profession to students.
